Online Nikah Requirements

Online participation does not remove the basic requirements of Nikah. The parties must first satisfy the legal, documentary and religious conditions relevant to their case.

Online Nikah requirements for Muslim couples

Legal Capacity

Both parties must be legally capable of marrying under the law applicable to the place and circumstances of the marriage.

Free Consent

Consent must be voluntary and clearly established. Remote participation must not obscure identity or consent.

Identity Evidence

CNIC, NICOP, passport or other reliable identity evidence is normally required for both parties.

Witnesses

Appropriate witnesses must be arranged according to the relevant religious and procedural requirements.

Age and Legal Eligibility

Marriage-age rules in Pakistan are not identical in every province or territory and have changed over time. We therefore check the law applicable to the relevant location rather than publishing one blanket age rule for every case. Couples should provide accurate ages and locations before arrangements are made.

Marital Status

Where either party has been married before, documents relating to divorce, khula, talaq, dissolution or the death of a former spouse may be required. The nature of the evidence depends on the previous marriage and the registration history.

Wakeel or Representative

If one party cannot attend, a Wakeel may sometimes act on that party’s behalf. The authority should be specific, reliable and consistent with the intended Nikah. Overseas cases may require a written special power of attorney and may also involve attestation or consular formalities.

Mahr and Nikah Terms

The parties should agree the essential Nikah terms, including mahr, before the ceremony. Material terms should be recorded accurately in the Nikah Nama rather than left to assumptions after the Nikah.

Registration Requirements

Religious solemnisation and civil/administrative registration are related but separate matters. After the Nikah, the Nikah Nama should be completed and the appropriate registration process followed through the competent authority.

Overseas couples: If you intend to use the marriage record for immigration, spouse visa, citizenship or another foreign-law purpose, check the destination country’s requirements separately. Pakistan registration does not itself guarantee foreign recognition.
