What Is a Wakeel in a Nikah?

A Wakeel acts as an authorised representative for a party in the Nikah. The precise role should be understood in the context of the parties’ consent, the intended marriage terms and the method by which authority has been granted.

When Is a Wakeel Commonly Considered?

Wakeel arrangements frequently arise where a bride or groom is overseas, cannot attend at the relevant place, or needs a representative for a properly structured remote Nikah. The use of a Wakeel should not be improvised on the day of the ceremony.

Consent and Scope of Authority

The party’s free consent remains fundamental. The Wakeel should know the identity of the proposed spouse and the authorised terms, including any agreed mahr. A written power of attorney may be appropriate, particularly in overseas cases.
